For over forty years, Mikal Gilmore was one of rock journalism’s most soulful voices, profiling giants like Bruce Springsteen and Kurt Cobain for Rolling Stone. But for Gilmore, music was never just a job—it was a lifeline. His career as a critic is deeply intertwined with a heavy, painful personal history. He is best known for his devastating 1994 memoir, Shot in the Heart, which explored his family’s traumatic legacy and the 1977 execution of his brother, Gary Gilmore. Throughout his life, music served as his ultimate escape and emotional shield from that darkness.
To cope, Gilmore built a massive physical sanctuary: a staggering collection of 40,000 records and CDs that eventually came to dominate his home and his relationships. He wrote candidly about this lifelong obsession on his Substack, Night Beat, describing how he clung to his music through heartbreak and severe illness, before finally making the difficult decision to let the physical collection go.
